Possible Font's to use as a title of my music magazine front cover

The title for my music magazine will be "Microphone Fiend", personally this is a good sounding title as it relates to music and the title connotes the type of heavy style of music that my magazine will represent.

Here are some possible font's that i may use for the title of my music magazines front cover.

I really like the font above as it looks eroded and very modern, appealing to the type of target audience that I would be looking to sell to. Also it stands out and looks original.

This font stands out alot, however I feel that it looks to child like and very much in the same style as bubble writing, this wouldn't appeal to the target audience neither does the looks correspond with the title.

This title doesn't stand out as much as i would like it to, but it has better quality's. It looks good, I believe it suits the style of the magazine and is very modern, possibly the font i will use for the final front cover piece.

The font above is similar to the previous font shown before it, the only difference is that it is more contrasting, with the whites and blacks. Again it looks very modern and would appeal to the target audience.

Possible photo's for my double page article

Here are some possible photo's for the double page article i will be writing and producing as part of my Media Studies coursework. I took them at a band rehearsal of a local school band in my area. Some of these photo's will be very useful when producing my double page article as they capture the band really well and look good.

This photo above is well composed, the image looks good and would fit well with some of the other photo's below.

My Mock Project of a Student Magazine Front cover, Contents page and Evaluation

Below is the mock project of my front cover and contents page for a Student magazine.

Media Studies Evaluation

My task was to create a student magazine front cover and contents page, using Photoshop elements. I wanted a front cover with a mid-shot photograph on the front as the main image; I also then wanted to incorporate other smaller images onto the contents page. The cover needed a column inch and a title at most. To start with I went out with my camera and went around the school taking mid-shots of around 10 sixth former’s, I then downloaded these photos onto the computer. Once they were downloaded I selected the main image I wanted for the front cover and edited it.
The editing involved many different processes; to start with, I edited the colour of the photo using a part of Photoshop called curves, this meant by changing the curves affected the brightness of the photo, the contrast and the colour. I then cropped the photo to fit on a standard A4 page. Then I placed text behind the person on the cover by cutting out the mid-shot of the person and removing him from the background. I then added a layer above the background which contained the title and then pasted the image of the person back on top of the background and text on a layer above the two, obviously the text is still visible while underneath the image of the person.
I added a column inch, I planned out what I was going to use for my text and then added it so it curved around the person on the cover. I have used different colour text for the column inch and different size’s. Before my cover I had planned out what it will look like by using simple sketches, however I changed what my final front cover looked like as the sketches I had devised weren’t practical or were different from the image I had first found. I was easy to find a good photo for the cover as I used an SLR camera to achieve a high quality photo, furthermore when editing it using Photoshop most photos can be changed to make them look better than they really are.
For the contents page I used a similar method in achieving the desired format and look. I took some wide shots of people working around school; I edited these two photos using Photoshop and pasted them onto an A4 sized Photoshop document. The same title as on the first page is copied and pasted onto the contents page, I then change the colour of the title and add subheadings and text down the left hand side above the images. After that I added a carefully planned editorial onto the right hand side above the other image. I finally added a grey rectangular box at the top of the page a layer beneath the title.
If I was going to create a student magazine I would have improved on certain parts of the two pages but there are some aspects that I have done well. I think my contents page and front cover were good, I am pleased with the layout of the text and images together, and also I’m pleased with the high quality images I have used as they have been edited really well. Finally I am pleased with the way I have placed the text behind the cover image on a separate layer. There are a couple of things I could improve on, firstly I could have used different fonts on the front cover and contents page, I could have made the front cover image relate more to the task set of creating a student magazine and furthermore I could have improved on the text and layout.

Previous magazine research into how magazines use front covers and contents pages to attract readers

I am going to find out how magazines use front covers and contents pages to attract readers. The magazine I will be looking at is ‘Classic Rock’. Classic Rock is a magazine devoted to the biggest rock bands, current music issues and gig listings. This particular copy of Classic Rock focuses on the worst band break ups and the split of Velvet Revolver, it also documents on the different viewpoints of the members from Velvet Revolver. The front cover depicts the lead guitarist and bassist from the band Velvet Revolver. The two members are very large on the page taking up a lot of the page and they are even blocking out most of the title as well, showing attitude and power. At the bottom is the singer from Velvet Revolver in a small box, this shows the singer as a very small minded and petty person and the distance between the two images represents the two different viewpoints in the Velvet Revolver split. People will be interested in the break up of an iconic band and using the images in this way is sure to attract the attention of the reader. The background of the front cover is black; this could connote danger and darkness and has a strong link to the type of music within the magazine.
At the top of the page there is the heading ‘Classic Rock’. This magazine heading is in a fixed location on the page, it is also large to attract the reader and furthermore the title is white on a black background, this is a technique of using a high contrast between the page and an object and the device is used successfully here in standing out to potential buyers. A free C.D. is also given away with the copy and it’s advertised in clear colourful and vibrant colours as to jump out at anyone browsing through magazines and it works, and once it has caught the attention of the consumer they are bound to buy it because of the amazing offer. Down the side of the page there are numerous bands listed to show who features in the magazine, this is key in any magazine as there needs to be some variation within the issue. The prices of magazines are essential to sales; this particular magazine is extremely dear at an extravagant price of £4.98, but the editors have resized the pricing so it’s very difficult to see, this means the price won’t put the buyer off from purchasing it.

When opening the contents page the reader’s attention is automatically drawn to the energetic colours and the large image. On the contents page colour and images are used to create meaning, there is an image of a roman man with a red cloak, helmet and spear, the red cloak and soldier connote aggression and violence and it relates very much to the style of music that is within the magazine as the music is heavy and violent itself this will appeal to the target audience. Furthermore the contents page uses the same devices as the cover; there is high contrast between the writing and background making it clear for the reader to see the writing. The use of images is also very similar, as they have positioned the different people from Velvet Revolver in separate parts of the page, again to show how there is tension between the two and using the distance on the page helps represent the distance of the people in real life. Finally allowing the reader to find out about other smaller articles and parts is useful because when opening to the contents page the reader may not want to read about the main issues and may want to cut straight to the other bits so to aid the reader there are many sub articles listed, for example ‘The Dirt’ and ‘Buyers Guide’, which show clearly what the magazine contains. The consumer can then make a snap decision and purchase the magazine based on the contents, that’s why the contents are so important in attracting the reader.
